Don't get me wrong here - I admit that a fair amount of it is pretty amazing, and contains a lot of artistic merit. However, I think one thing is nearly always forgotten...that it is fan art.

There is a limit to the imagination of the work, the art itself and the time spent are all overpowered by the fact it is not, no matter who drew it, an original. The character belongs to someone else, as most times do the colours and the pose and the ideas. This, to me, is as good as shoving a stuffed peacock on display and proclaiming it as art.

I just get frustrated when i come online. Some artists have few comments, no DD's, very little publicity...and they are amazing. If you go back and browse a few pages, you can usually find some unique art. However, if you look into the popular category on the front page, the vast majority of popular 'art' is in fact fan art. I have nothing against the artists, or their choices of art forms. what frustrates me is usually looking at the comments - people are NOT commenting the work of the artist, but simply commenting the characters. "Yey i love Dante" yeah...so what? The whole point in putting art up here is to recieve praise and critisism in the hopes of improving, not to talk about your favourite mangas. Drawing stickmen of your favourite characters in a scene that all fans are going to enjoy is not creative, its proberbly something you've all thought of before, so why the popularity? Because people are commenting the characters, the story...everything but the art itself. Where is the artistic merit in that?

Now, once again i must emphasise that i am not attacking the artists. I have seen a lot of amazing fan art, with time and effort and hell even imagination put into it. Who i am critisisng is the critics themselves - stop commenting on a piece because your favourite ninja is mentioned, comment on the art itself!!
